The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter was released as a movie in 1968, one year after McCullers's death. Directed by Robert Ellis Miller, Carson McCullers herself helped write the screenplay. It was nominated for multiple Golden Globe and Academy Awards, including Best Motion Picture- Drama.
