"For one thing the thought of the violin kept worrying her. She could never have made it like a real one--and after all those weeks of planning the very thought of it made her sick. But how could she have been so sure the idea would work? So dumb? Maybe when people longed for a thing that bad the longing made them trust in anything that might give it to them."

That kind of thinking can be both good and bad. Good because you have hope, and that you believe in something. Everyone needs to believe in something, or life would be very predictable and boring. Its bad because you can inevitably be let down, and trust in the wrong things and people. It's never good to be so naive that you will believe unrealistic things can happen, like Mick believing she could make a violin herself.
