Born Lula Carson Smith on February 19, 1917, Carson McCullers achieved early success when she wrote The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter at the age of 23. She is best known for this novel as well as The Member of the Wedding. Carson McCullers died on September 29, 1967 in New York.
